Marijuana is widely known to be a safer substance than all other drugs, legal or not. There is no chance of overdose death as there is with all other drugs from codeine to alcohol to aspirin. Side-effects of marijuana are largely benign; euforia, relaxation, increase in appetite.
And the fact that marijuana was originally prohibited on the advice of the racist Harry Anslinger (http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/taxact/anslng1.htm), it’s not hard to understand why minorities have consistently been targeted for drug offences.
There is no rational reason why marijuana shouldn’t be legalized and regulated just like cough-medicine or beer.
Marijuana is less addictive than caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and nearly all prescription drugs, and there is no credible evidence to support the claim that marijuana leads to use of other more dangerous drugs (http://www.drugwarfacts.org/). In fact, all the prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are given to people throughout their lives are more dangerous drugs than is marijuana.
We have now reached a point where, according to the federal governments estimates, 1 in 31 people in the USA are either in jail or under law-enforcement supervision (probation/parole)!! We are a prison state, and why?? Because of the insane prohibition of marijuana (and other drugs). Meanwhile, drug king-pins in Mexico are now turning up on the Forbes “worlds richest billionaires” list!! So, let me get this right; our government spends billions on the drug war every year, yet the drug traffickers are now turning into billionaires themselves??? Thousands of people are being needlessly murdered in Mexico and the USA every year over the illegal drug market. Please explain to me how this constitutes a successfull and sustainable policy!
